Jason took this picture this morning when he went to check on Makayla and saw that she was sleeping on her side. When I went to get her a few hours later, she had turned herself 180 degrees so her head was at the top of the crib! This evening she was on her playmat and scooted herself all the way around a complete circle! Ok, I know we are really acting like "first-time parents" getting so excited about this. By the third kid, we probably we won't be impressed until he or she can get out of the crib and get dressed on their own! Did I just say third kid??? Yikes!Tuesday, April 29, 2008

More from Saturday
Another silly couch picture.

This is called a Bumpo chair. After hearing that my friend Kelly's little boy Matthew liked it, I decided it was worth a try. It's designed to help babies learn to sit before they are able to on their own. We tried it a few weeks ago but Makayla wasn't quite ready for it. Now it works pretty well. She looks like such a big girl in her new chair!
We tried to get a nice picture but we couldn't get Makayla or Kona to look away from the TV!
Another pretty flower picture :)
We hope you all had a nice relaxing weekend!

Makayla started the morning hanging out in our bed (I was refusing to get up...)

Then she moved to the play gym. She has started scooting around and it's always a surprise when we put her down in one place and then when we check on her, she has moved! In this picture, she has managed to get her leg through one of the loops hanging down. Don't worry, she was able to escape unharmed.
Hanging out on the couch.
She really is a silly goose!

1st trip to the beach!
Unfortunately, we did not pick the best day to head to the beach! We went to Monterey Bay to meet up with a group doing a beach clean up for Earth Day. Since Jason has been very eager to dive, he signed up to do that while I happily hung out on the beach with Makayla. As we drove towards the coast and the dark clouds, we had a feeling the weather was not going to be the best. It was pretty chilly and very windy so I spent most of the time hiding Makayla from the sand. So needless to say, she did not take a swim in the ocean - this time!
Jason got all suited up in a dry suit. It's pretty nice to be in 50 degree water and not even get wet!
Makayla learned the harsh reality that sand can be very fun to play in, but it's pretty horrible when it's windy!

Starting to grab things!
We think it's pretty exciting that Makayla is starting to reach for and grab things. I'm sure soon enough we will be wishing she wasn't so curious! And since it was 87 degrees here today, I thought it would be a good day to show off her little arms and legs!
So many cool things, which should I grab first?
I got one, now for the other side.
Did it move away?
Almost!

Sounds
I've always known my favorite sound is hearing little kids laugh. You know which one I mean, the uncontrollable giggle of children. You can't help but smile when you hear it. :)
I've never really thought about the worst sound, until today. Of course there are lots of unpleasant sounds, but today I heard the WORST sound ever. It's the sound of a 10 week old getting her first set of shots. It was awful! I have never heard Makayla cry like that before! Of course she was fine two minutes later but I had to stop in the restroom to compose myself before leaving...
Other than the horrible sound, Makayla's two month check up was great. She weighed in at 12 pounds and just about 24 inches. And the doctor said everything else looks great and she was a very big and healthy baby!

Sounds gross, but it's yummy!
So I have heard about this before, and after seeing it on the Food Network, I thought I would give it a try. I don't know what it's called but here's how to make it -
Cut up some strawberries
add about 1 tbsp balsamic vinegar (seriously!)
add about 1 tsp sugar
add a few shakes of black pepper (seriously!)
stir together and let sit for about 30 minutes
then, enjoy!
*adjust the amount of ingredients based on how many strawberries you cut up
I made this the other night and made Jason try it first. After he didn't spit it out, I figured it was safe! Try it - it's yummy!

Super Simple Salmon
Since all the health info says we should all eat more fish, I thought I would pass on a yummy salmon recipe that we really like. I saw it on the Food Network (of course!) from Robin Miller.
Ingredients:
2 tbsp fresh lemon juice
2 tbsp Dijon mustard (we like the whole grain kind)
2 tbsp honey
1 tsp lemon zest
4 (5-ounce) salmon fillets (we only get two since Makayla and Spaz don't eat a whole portion)
salt and pepper
cooking spray
Directions:
Lightly spray a shallow baking dish (I use an 8x8 glass dish). In the dish, combine the lemon juice, mustard, honey and lemon zest. Season both sides of the salmon with a little salt and pepper and place in the dish (I leave the skin on). Turn over to coat in glaze, cook with skin side down. Can be covered with plastic wrap and refrigerated up to three hours, or cooked immediately. To cook, preheat oven to 400 degrees, bake about 10 minutes or until fish is fork tender.
We usually eat this with rice and steamed veggies. It's delicious!
Variation:
Today I didn't have any lemon so I changed it up a bit and it was just as good.
Ingredients:
Juice from half an orange
about 1 tbsp of soy sauce
about 1 tsp of chopped ginger
about 1 tbsp of honey
Mix together in dish and follow above directions!
Enjoy!

Such a cutie!
Makalya is already starting to swim! She practices her back float and her kicks almost every night. She really seems to enjoy bath time and didn't get upset at all tonight when a bunch of water went right in her face!
Pretty in her pink dress. If Makayla is anything like me, it won't be long before she prefers jeans and t-shirts over dresses!
She can fly! I don't recommend this game soon after feeding her...
What a beauty. Some people have asked who she looks like and we think Makayla definitely looks like her daddy's baby pictures. I had light blonde fuzz on my head for about the first two years! And Makayla is already tanner than I am... But she does have my big blue eyes :) It is fun to watch her change and her personality develop every day.

8 hours of sleep - again!
Yup, Makayla slept for 8 hours again! And this time I slept about that long too! I know better than to think we are on a schedule yet so I fully expect to be up at 3 am again soon :) And for those of you that may think I am silly for talking so much about Makayla's sleep patterns - my conversations are usually about sleep or poop. Now I bet you are glad that I am sticking to updates on sleep...

8 hours of sleep!
That's right - Makayla slept for 8 hours last night! She fell asleep around 9 pm and I figured she would be up around 3 am as usual. Well, 3 am came and went and she was still asleep! Unfortunately, I was up about every 15 minutes checking the clock and wondering if she was ok since she still had not woken up... She woke up happy and well rested around 5 am! I hope to soon relax enough so that I can sleep the whole 8 hours too :)
